You’re Not Lazy — You’re Overwhelmed

November 18, 20251 min read

If you’ve ever looked at your life and thought, “Why can’t I just get it together?” — this one’s for you.

As moms, we’re conditioned to believe that slowing down, needing help, or not being “on” all the time is a sign of weakness. But in reality? You’re not lazy. You’re overwhelmed. You’re carrying mental loads nobody sees, and you’re trying to pour from an empty tank.

Here’s what’s really happening:

  1. Your brain prioritizes survival, not self-improvement. Your brain will always choose the path of least resistance because it takes up less energy. It's why we can drive to work and forget how we got there.

  2. Decision fatigue makes even small tasks feel heavy. Have you ever considered the amount of steps it takes to get in the shower? We tend to underestimate the number of choices we make everyday for not just ourselves, but also our families.

  3. You’ve been running on low energy for too long. Because our attention is constantly being pulled into 1000 different directions, our brain is exhausted deciding what is important and what is unecessary.

  4. You don’t need more motivation — you need margin. I think too often we set these high standards of excellence (my belief is because we're women and can "handle it all". Motivation and willpower might get you started, but it won't keep you going.

When you remove the shame, everything gets lighter. When you start asking ourselves "What CAN I do today?" instead of naming all the things I "should" be doing. Remember you are capable to handle a lot— but you do need space, support, and doable habits.

If this hit home, tell me in the comments: What’s one area of your life that feels heavy right now?
